Announcing the Fourth Annual District-Wide
"Battle of the Books" Reading Competition!
2007-2008

{tower}
Last year, Paddock Road sponsored the District-Wide “Battle of the Books” competition for all interested 4-6th graders. The competition was a huge success!! Elementary schools were represented by 32 teams. Many spectators were there to show their support. The time has come to invite all interested students to join District 66 and the Omaha Public Library for the 2008 event!

Throughout the summer and first semester, participants will read the selected book titles listed below and form a team of four students with an adult manager. The program culminates in January, when teams compete against one another for the championship title. We encourage all students to form a team and participate! A team consists of four members from one grade level OR perhaps a combination of grade levels. You may have alternates in case a team member can't participate.

New this year is a $4.00 entry fee per team. Team member information sheets must be returned, along with the $4 entry fee, to Westside High School's Guidance Office by September 21, 2007. Questions?? Contact Lisa Paquette at 343-2610 or Karen Berry (Omaha Public Library) 444-4852. Students should begin reading the required books as soon as possible. Team members can decide whether they each read all the books on the list or divide the reading amongst themselves. These books can count towards the Omaha Public Library summer program and many are on the Golden Sower list.

Brief Rules of the Competition
Each team will be asked an equal number of questions. The team will have 20 seconds to give the title and 10 seconds to give the author’s name. Five points are given for the correct title and three points for the correct author for a total of eight possible points per question. One team member is designated as the spokesperson. Only the spokesperson may give the answer. If an incorrect answer is given, the opposing team will have 10 seconds to give the title for five points.

Sample Question: In what book do five children get to tour Mr. Wonka's factory after finding golden tickets in their candy bars? Answer: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

We will need volunteers to help at the competition. Jobs that volunteers would be needed for include timekeeping, reading questions and keeping score during each competition. High School students can earn service learning hours! Last year the competition started at 8:00 and we finished at 12:30. If you know of someone who would like to donate their time to help with this event, please call or email Lisa Paquette at 343-2610 or lpaquette@westside66.org or Karen Berry 444-4852 or kberry@omahapubliclibrary.org

We can't wait to see your team at the "Battle of the Books" competition. We would LOVE your help as well!!! Again, contact Lisa or Karen if you have any questions or have a volunteer for the day of competition.
