Happening in Our District

Sunset Mathletes Score a Victory
Sunset Hills sixth-graders took top awards at the Bennington Math Competition recently. Sunset's Team A (Sylvia Fehr, Laura Liu and Ian Pinhero) won first place in the written exam and quizbowl competitions. Sunset's Team B (Grant Cai, Vivian Jacobitz, Madison Jagels and Daniel Wood) won third place in the written exam. Twenty-four teams from the Metro participated in the inaugural event where the students participated in a group written team test and quiz bowl competitions.

WMS is No Place for Hate
Westside Middle School was recognized as a "No Place For Hate School" by Anti-Defamation League. WMS students participated in a variety of activities promoting acceptance, tolerance and making the school safe. May 17th was the conclusion of the activities, with a presentation of a "No Place For Hate" banner from Alan Potash, executive director of Anti-Defamation League.

WMS Teachers Awarded for Turbine Club
Westside Middle School teachers Caroline Sheffield and Mark Durante have been recognized by the Nebraska Association for Middle Level Education (NAMLE) for going above and beyond the textbook to develop new projects to engage their students. NAMLE President, Julie Herink, at left, awarded Sheffield and Durante with NAMLE's Merit Award for their wind turbine project. They were presented with a check for $250 for their efforts.

WHS Named One of America's Best High Schools
Westside High School has been named to the list of most challenging high schools in America by The Washington Post. This is Westside's third consecutive year in the annual Washington Post poll. Schools are ranked by a simple formula. Read more about Westside's ranking here.

Westside Foundation and Omaha Gives
The Westside Foundation will be part of a new online, fundraising campaign on May 22. Omaha Gives, a 24-hour charitable challenge, is a community-wide event that will celebrate Omaha's spirit of giving, raise awareness of local non-profits and celebrate the collective effort it takes to make Omaha great. The 24-hour donation period begins at 12:01 a.m. on May 22. The minimum donation is $10. To donate or get more information, visit omahagives24.org. More than 300 non-profit have signed on to participate in the event, including Westside Foundation. The Foundation currently supports the Westside Early Childhood Education Program at 11 locations within the District, involving 100 teachers and 1000 children. Other activities and projects are curriculum improvement, mentoring programs, parental support activities, facilities improvement, student activities, grants to teachers and staff, scholarships to graduating seniors and donor-established scholarships and honorariums.

WMS Students Participate in Music Festival
On Saturday, April 27 several 7th and 8th graders participated in the Millard Solo and Ensemble Festival at Millard Central Middle School. Westside finished with 15 Superior ratings and 7 Excellent ratings. 7th grade students receiving Superior ratings were: Hannah Johnson, flute solo; Ellie Sadler, clarinet solo; Grace Calderon, oboe solo and alto saxophone solo; Christian Madsen, trombone solo. Kaitlyn Mathis received an excellent rating for her clarinet solo. 8th grade students receiving Superior ratings were: Allison Hall and Gillian Herrera for flute solos; Daniel Guo and Simon Bessmer, alto saxophone solo; Daniel Guo and Danny Berentson, alto saxophone duet; Tyler Douglass and Jacob Wigodsky, trumpet solos; Simon Bessmer, french horn solo; Candace Cusimano, trombone solo and Taylor Schendt, tuba solo. Students receiving Excellent ratings were: Howard Thiel, oboe solo; Anna Shehan, alto saxophone solo; Zach McCarty, tenor saxophone solo; TK Kim and Phillip Trimble, trombone solos and Francine Watkins, vibraphone solo. Congratulations to these fine musicians!

Annual Golf Outing is July 1
The annual Westside Hall of Fame Golf Outing is set for July 1. The event will be held at The Players Club in Omaha and is open to all players of all abilities.
