Community Conference Center History

The Westside Community Education Program and facility began in 1987 at the former Valley View Junior High. Community partnerships were formed that offered a variety of educational services and programs to Westside residents and the surrounding community. Post-secondary classes were offered from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University, and Metropolitan Community College. Service clubs held meetings, businesses conducted training sessions, and sports clubs held athletic events in the gymnasium.

The Westside Community Conference Center was off to a successful start. The Omaha Quilt Guild made the CCC the home of its annual quilt show which draws patrons from a ten state area.

In 1993 the CCC widened it's focus and began planning and implementation of the Westside Staff Development and Technology Center. A wing of the building was designated for teacher training and meetings. Two of the rooms were equipped for the technology team to train students and staff in the quickly growing field of computer literacy. Other rooms in the building were designated for district office space and the CCC became the office of Nutrition Services for the district.

In the fall of 2007, Westside Community Schools announced that the Westside Career Center would move into the south end of the building to start classes in August, 2008.  The Westside Community Conference Center continues to rent the facility and cater events in the Westside Banquet Room, Lighthouse Dining Suite, Alumni Executive Boardroom and Gym.  Access 66 Catering is the exclusive caterer for all meeting and events and also caters to many other off-site venues.

The Westside Community Conference Center is an excellent example of how a school district can take surplus property and utilize it to the economic benefit of the district, while, at the same time, fulfilling needs in the community and enhancing the educational program to its K-12 students. Westside's Community Conference Center is the only one of its kind in Omaha and few similar facilities exist around the country.
The Westside Community School District does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, creed, color, age, national origin or disability.
