Behavior Supports
For students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders, the district provides a multi-level system of assessment and intervention. The school psychologist works in collaboration with the classroom teacher, special education staff, parents and others to first assess the student’s needs, conduct a functional behavioral assessment and to develop a behavior plan for the student. Every behavior plan addresses common components as well as individual needs to promote the most success for the student in and out of the classroom setting. Individual behavior plans are designed to encourage students to choose appropriate behaviors through the teaching of strategies, replacement behaviors, social skills and positive reinforcement. Academic support is provided for students whose behavior may be affected by their academic abilities. This support can take place in the classroom or in the special education setting. Other supports for students and their families include: mentors, working with the guidance counselor, having friendship groups, working with outside agencies and parenting classes.
