SCHOOL SAFETY, SECURITY AND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS
The safety and security of our students, staff, and visitors is a top priority at Westside Community Schools. Our Director of School Safety and Security leads the district's comprehensive safety program, working proactively to create and maintain secure learning environments where students can focus on learning and growth. Through comprehensive planning, ongoing training, strong partnerships with local first responders, and continuous evaluation of our practices, WCS is committed to ensuring our schools are prepared for a wide range of situations.
Safety planning and decision-making are guided by a cross-functional district safety committee that includes the Director of School Safety and Security, Director of Special Education, Director of Building Services, Director of Student Services, Director of Communications and Engagement, and Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Business Operations. Together, this team oversees districtwide safety initiatives, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement efforts.
Westside Community Schools utilizes the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a nationally recognized framework that provides clear, consistent actions during emergencies and other safety situations. Students and staff regularly practice these protocols and participate in safety drills throughout the school year. In addition to emergency preparedness, the Safety and Security team oversees building security measures, visitor management systems, threat assessment processes, and safety training. By fostering a culture of preparedness, awareness, and shared responsibility, the team helps create environments where every student and staff member can feel safe, supported, and ready to thrive.
