January 6, 2021 | Westside DECA Hosting Suicide Prevention Walk

Posted January 6, 2021

The following is a message from Westside High School DECA Senior, Elizabeth Harding.

Jillian Snow, Maddy Diprima, and I are a part of Westside DECA. DECA is a non profit organization run by students. It prepares students to go out in the world and be successful in their future careers. This project is meant to represent the entire Westside DECA organization. We have chosen to focus and raise awareness on suicide prevention. Westside’s district was recently faced with a student suicide that took a great impact on the whole community. With the pandemic COVID-19, poor mental health is at an all time high and continues to increase. The initial plan was an in person walk to bring together to community. However, with the current pandemic as well as the weather in mid January, this would not be possible nor safe to bring a large group of people together. Instead, we have moved the walk to a virtual event. There will be a $3 expense to sign up for the walk and the proceeds will go to Debby and Doug Fehr’s foundation of choice in honor of their son, Joe Fehr, who lost his life to suicide. The proceeds with go to suicide prevention. Sign ups for this event will be January 13th and 15th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in the Westside High School MAIN LOT. You will have from the day you sign up until January 31, 2021 to submit your picture!

Please get together with a couple friends or family members and go out for a walk to fight against suicide! We will also accept any walking or running on treadmills, considering it’s not exactly outdoor weather! Prior to the walk we will be giving out suicide prevention t-shirts at a drive by/pick up event.

1. Pick up your suicide prevention t-shirt and pay $3 to enter the virtual walk at Westside High School on January 13th and 15th, 2021 from 4:30-6:30 pm

2. Walk or run a mile or more (outdoors or on a treadmill) AND take a picture
