October 12, 2021 | District Updates Mask Guidelines for 2021/22

WESTSIDE:

We are thankful to be wrapping up a successful 1st quarter of school this week.  Thank you for your support, patience, and flexibility as we do all we can to keep our students and staff in school in a safe manner as we continue to navigate confirmed cases and quarantines due to the ongoing pandemic.

We are extending our K-12 mask policy on all campuses for two more weeks through Friday, October 29th.  We will continue to analyze our internal data, as well as community-wide data in the coming weeks, and will make an announcement on/around October 26th about whether masks will be required or optional in November.  We will remain in close contact with medical experts at Nebraska Medicine/UNMC, the Douglas County Health Department, and Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, among others.

As you will see with the data below, we have seen a small decline in cases throughout our school district over the past month.  All of these numbers are also posted in the COVID-19 section of our website.

We continue to weigh many different factors, to include a combination of the following:

  • Number of confirmed cases within our school district decreasing instead of increasing by week on a consistent and steady basis.
  • Number of quarantines within our school district decreasing instead of increasing by week on a consistent and steady basis.
  • Number of total confirmed cases per 100,000 residents per week decreasing instead of increasing by week within Douglas County.
  • Number of total school-aged children with confirmed cases per week decreasing instead of increasing by week within Douglas County.
  • Access to vaccinations for our elementary-aged students allowing their families to make decisions as to whether or not the vaccine is something they want for their child(ren).

Best Wishes,

Mike Lucas
