Posted November 12, 2021

We wanted to make sure you were aware of a great opportunity for our students! Intern Omaha, a co-curricular internship program powered by Avenue Scholars, is hosting its inaugural Intern Omaha Expo. The career fair will connect over 350 high school students from area school districts with 37 Omaha businesses to expose students to possible career paths and internships in the area. Intern Omaha Expo is on November 18, 2021 from 9am-2pm at the Scott Conference Center in Aksarben Village.

Westside Community Schools is very pleased to be a partner with Intern Omaha.  This year alone, Westside High School has 14 students participating in a paid internship program within various employment categories as shown below.

  • Business                                   5 students
  • Trades/Labor/Manufacturing     1 student
  • Healthcare                                1 student
  • Automotive/Diesel                    1 student
  • Nonprofit Management             2 students
  • Information Technology            1 student

“Intern Omaha aims to make a significant impact in workforce development efforts at the high school level by connecting high school students to internships with some of the city’s best employers,” said Dr. Ken Bird, President and CEO of Avenue Scholars. “Intern Omaha Expo will give hundreds of students the opportunity to learn networking skills and engage with our business partners, while giving our businesses the opportunity to recruit their next generation of talent.”

In addition to the career fair that some Westside students will attend, 10 representatives from LinkedIn will be at the Expo to run the LinkedIn Lounge where students can learn about the networking aspects of LinkedIn, how to set up a profile, and how to take a professional headshot. The LinkedIn Lounge will give students tips on meeting and networking with the businesses at the Expo to help them get a head start on the interviewing and application process.

Upon arrival, each student will be given a passport card encouraging them to have at least four professional conversations with businesses and stop at the LinkedIn Lounge. Students can win prizes for completing their passport.

Student applications for Intern Omaha’s 2022-2023 program will open the Monday after the Expo. There are currently 181 available internship positions with 72 businesses in a variety of industries like IT, business, trades, automotive, and more.
