Westside Community Council
Westside Community Council is composed of 2 to 3 members from each of the 12 schools in the District. The members plan and implement district-wide volunteer activities for the students in all grades. Committees include:
Westside Middle School Career Day
Eighth grade Career Day is a collaborative effort between Volunteer Council and the WMS business teachers. It begins with an assembly featuring a keynote speaker and is followed by three 30-minute career sessions representing career clusters that students’ preference highest. A teacher and a parent volunteer supervise these sessions. The Career Day Committee is responsible for finding a keynote speaker, career presenters and a volunteer to assist and introduce each presenter. Committee members and a few other volunteers staff the check-in tables and match career presenters and classroom volunteers as they arrive. This morning event usually takes place the second Friday in May.
Battle of the Books
This committee is responsible for all aspects of coordinating this annual quiz bowl style event for the 10 elementary schools in the District. The committee chairs work with the Community Activities Associate for any District support needs in addition to promoting the event in schools, gathering book donations for competitors, securing snack donation and helping to recruit volunteers.
District Outreach/Advocacy
This committee is responsible for activities that reach into the community. It also carries out any “special projects” which arise during the year and do not fall under the job description of another standing committee. The project may be a one-time event or recurring activity. They would assist the District in disseminating information on issues - bonds, levy’s, and legislation, etc. - that is important to the District. They would help explain information to the Community Council and take any action steps necessary to help the District - i.e. write letters to representatives, go door to door for signatures, etc.
The Closet and Pantry
This committee maintains and delivers distributions from the District clothing/coat closet (“The Closet”) and food pantry (“The Pantry”). Committee members sort and and maintain the clothing and food inventories, fulfill requests from school personnel and set up seasonal pop-up clothing shops at selected schools as needed.
Westside High School Community Club
This committee’s goal is to provide recognition for the WHS teachers and staff. The primary mission is to support the faculty and staff by providing meals throughout the year at various events. Committee members help solicit donations and coordinate meal efforts.
