Westside Community Council
Westside Community Council is composed of members from all of our district’s 12 schools. These volunteers plan and implement events and projects serving students and staff throughout the district. Committees include:
Westside Middle School Career Day
Eighth-grade Career Day is a collaborative effort between WCC and the WMS staff. All students attend an assembly featuring a keynote speaker; then each student goes to three small-group career sessions with speakers representing career clusters that match that student’s areas of interest. The Career Day Committee is responsible for finding a keynote speaker and career presenters, as well as volunteers to assist during the event, which usually takes place the second Friday in May.
Battle of the Books
This committee is responsible for all aspects of Battle of the Books–an annual, quiz-bowl-style, team competition, open to 4th-6th graders from all 10 elementary schools. Tasks include coordinating all logistics of the event, promoting the event in schools, and recruiting volunteers for the day of the competition, among other duties. The competition takes place on a Saturday morning in mid-to-late March.
Book Brigade
This committee collects, sorts, and delivers books for the bookshelves in several elementary schools and the Underwood Hills Early Childhood Center. These shelves give students access to books to take home and keep or return if they choose. Committee members work with school staff to assess need, organize donations, and distribute books to schools.
Clothing Closet
This committee maintains the inventory for the clothing closet at the district’s Family Resource Center. Committee members sort and organize donated clothing, fulfill requests from school personnel, and set up seasonal pop-up coat/clothing shops at selected schools as needed.
District Volunteers
This committee works with building principals to identify ways committee members can support school staff. The main project for these volunteers has been assisting teachers by providing weekly, small-group and one-on-one tutoring for students.
High School Community Club
This committee is responsible for providing teacher conference meals in the fall and the spring, as well as organizing and implementing Teacher Appreciation events throughout the year. They are also responsible for any community club needs that may arise.
