• About Curriculum

    • The Westside Community Schools implements the K-12 comprehensive standards outlined by the Nebraska Department of Education. As additional standards are established, it is our goal to continue to develop highly rigorous standards of learning. Student achievement of the standards is measured at all grade levels and in all courses through a comprehensive assessment system.

      Academic Course Standards

      K-12 Comprehensive English Language Arts Standards:

      Foundations of Reading: Students will develop and apply decoding and language comprehension skills and strategies to comprehend and leard from increasingly complex texts. 

      Reading Prose and Poetry: Students will learn and apply reading skills and strategies to comprehend grade-level literary texts. 

      Reading Informational Text: Students will learn to apply reading skills and strategies to comprehend grade-level informational texts. 

      Vocabulary: Students will build and use conversational, academic, and discipline-specific, grade-level vocabulary. 

      Writing and Foundations of Writing: Students will learn and apply writing skills and strategies to communicate effectively for a variety of purposes. 

      Speaking and Listening: Students will learn and apply speaking and listening skills and strategies to communicate effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes. 

      K-12 Math Standards:

      Number: Students will solve problems and reason with number concepts using multiple representations, make connections within math and across disciplines, and communicate their ideas. 

      Ratios and Proportions: Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. 

      Algebra: Students will solve problems and reason with algebra using multiple representations, make connections within math and across disciplines, and communicate their ideas. 

      Geometry: Students will solve problems and reason with geometry using multiple representations, make connections within math and across disciplines, and communicate their ideas. 

      Data: Students will solve problems and reason with data/probability using multiple representations, make connections within math and across disciplines, and communicate their ideas.

      Comprehensive Social Studies Standards: Social Studies standards at each grade level are written around four disciplines: civics, economics, geography, and history and four big ideas: questioning, applying, evaluating, and communicating.
